Blog #1

February 19, 2015

Trying to decide the subject of my first blog. I have narrowed it down to (1) "The meaning of Life" or (2) "How to make a good Graham Cracker Pie"

I am stuck here at the farm in about 6 feet of snow - Laura and rest of family in Delmont today - just me and the dog here together.

OK, I have decided - today the graham crackers get crunched. Laura usually does not like me in the kitchen, which is alright with me. I much prefer being in the "eating department" and she in the "cooking department." But what she does not know can't hurt too much. Right???

My mother used to make wonderful Graham Cracker pies and she also said they were easy, so here goes.

First the directions for the crust.

1. Get graham crackers - get a bunch - if we are going to do this, then do it right.

2. Get a big pie pan - the biggest you have - two if you don't have a big one.

3. Crush the graham crackers - oh this is going to be the fun part - we could do it by hand or put them in the blender. I vote for the blender - the dog does not like the noise, but she will get over it. Turn that baby on high! Make sure all spoons and fingers are out of the way before you turn on the blender.

4. My recipe says add 1/3 cup of melted butter and 1/4 cup of sugar to the crunched crumbs. But it also says 1 1/4 cups of crumbs and I think we may have a little more than that, so let's add about 1/2 cup of melted butter and 1/2 cup of sugar - I think butter and sugar are what makes it good and stick together.

5. How many sticks of butter equal 1/2 cup? Who knows - just melt some and see what we have. Microwave time.

6. Pour the butter and sugar on the crumbs - turn on the blender on high.

Uh-oh - be sure you put the lid on the blender - I wonder if Laura will notice those graham crackers stuck to the ceiling? We can now go with a smaller pie pan. Also, does anyone know how I can get these graham crackers out of my computer keyboard?

7. Ok back on track - please ignore any strange emails you may get from me - I was trying to clean off the keyboard and stuff just started flying everywhere - I think I just bought an airplane on Ebay, sent my grand daughter's baby pictures to Craig's List and my proctology report to my cousin in Kansas City. Good grief!

8. Alright we can do this - just get out of the way dog - you can lick that up later.

9. Put the crumbs you have left into the pie pan and spread evenly. Press them onto the bottom and sides of the pie plate. Bake at 375 for a while until light brown. It's already light brown, so I'm not sure what they mean by that.

10. Light the stove.

11. Wow, is it supposed to explode like that - I think my eyebrows are gone!

12. Ok, I think we have time for a nap while that bakes. Just a short nap - this cooking business is tiring.

Later......

I don't think we have to worry about #13 - maybe we can try this again tomorrow with a new batch of crumbs. Come here dog - it's not that bad! I'll scrape the black part off.
